The Story: Henry David Thoreau’s essay “Walking” celebrated the value of immersing ourselves in nature and mourned the rise of wild land becoming privately owned. In it, Thoreau proclaimed, “In short, all good things are wild and free,” a phrase that has plucked the heart strings of many of us who love wild places and the freedom we feel when we’re in them.
