The Story: Legend has it that Wisconsin's first governor, Nelson Dewey, had a heck of a time coming up with a motto for his state. After tossing out Civilitas Successit Barbaruin (Latin for Civilization Succeeds Barbarism), Excelsior (already the motto of New York state), Onward, and Upward, he finally landed on FORWARD. This pennant is for those who love the Badger State... or are simply glad that its state motto doesn't mention barbarism.
